Chapter Five

Audrey

For a woman who’s never been to a live fight before, I thought I’d be wincing at every turn. To my surprise, the whole scene was invigorating. Watching Danger float in that ring, both graceful and stronger than anyone I’ve ever seen in my life, was nothing less than thrilling. It felt like I was right there in the ring with him, and I couldn’t wait for the match to be over so that we’d be back in the same room.

“You sure you’ll be okay?” Charlotte brushes my hair over my shoulder.

“Are you kidding?” Lizzie slaps her sides. “She’s about to get fucked like she’s never been fucked before.”

“Such a lady, this one.” Willow teases. “But seriously, if you need anything, call me. I’ll be there in a flash.” My sister leans in for a squeeze. “Not that you’ll need to,” she whispers into my ear.

I give a curt, confident nod and watch the ladies walk out before security leads me back to Danger’s dressing room. I thank the large gentleman, and before I can knock on the door, I hear voices inside.

“It wasn’t the right time, Artie,” Danger says.

“You all but agreed to throw the match; then you end up taking the guy down before he knows what hit him.” Artie’s voice rises, and I duck behind the door, assuring I’m out of sight.

“All but agreed.” Danger grunts. “But I never said I would throw it for sure. Help me get these off.” I peer inside in time to see a young man helping him with his gloves.

Shit, maybe I should go? I could still catch Willow if I text her right now. As if sensing my hesitation, Danger turns toward the door. The pinch between his brows smooths instantly, one side of his mouth turning up into a smile.

“Hey,” I say, busted and embarrassed. “Wow, that was amazing.”

“You liked it, huh?”

“I really liked it.” My center erupts in flames when Danger’s lips spread into a full smile, still sweaty and shirtless, hair hanging over one eye.

“Give me five minutes to shower.” Danger walks over to me, his feral smell drenching my panties on the spot. He presses a kiss to my cheek, and I nearly faint from need as I watch him saunter back to where the showers are. The feeling is short-lived when I realize I’m left alone with Artie.

“I really did enjoy it,” I say, unable to stomach the uncomfortable silence.

“He was supposed to lose.”

“Excuse me?”

Artie turns to me, adjusts his cap. “This was supposed to be his last match.”

“Oh.” I wasn’t expecting that. “What happened?”

Artie looks me up and down. “I guess something more important popped up.” Without looking at me, he exits the room, leaving me alone with my confused thoughts. Surely he couldn’t mean that Danger won the match because of me? That’s crazy but not unappealing.

In the mirror, I adjust my dress, fix my hair, anything to pass the time while I wait for Danger to return. His bare feet flap against the concrete, pulling my attention over my shoulder.
